Nokia 6730 Classic – Ellegant Classic, Symbian OS

Nokia’s Classic collection is now enriched with a smart phone with S60 Symbian OS, Nokia 6730 Classic. Like the others, this handset offers simple features without reducing its performance.

Design

Nokia 6730 Classic has a candybar look, just like other Nokia’s Classics, with metallic lines on its edge, d pad, also home and clear buttons. The plastic covering on the surface gives you a sense of luxury when you touch it.

Nokia 6730 Classic has flat keypad buttons with a line separating each row. However, these lines don’t make access to any buttons uncomfortable, especially when pressing buttons in the same line.

The screen uses Nokia’s current trend: true color bit rate, alias 16,700,000 colors with QVGA resolution. Despite this quality, the display only has a diagonal of 2.2 inches, which makes it quite small if compared to the screen of other Nokia’s recent cell phones.

The newest 3rd FP Edition of S60 Symbian OS gives it typical menu appearance. One thing that makes this cell phone look rather unique is its home appearance with favorite contact widget, which reminds us of 5th edition S60 phones like 5800 and N97.

Multimedia

Nokia’s 6xxx series used to be ‘serious’ products with main features of business or office. This doesn’t apply to 6730 Classic, which offers all features quite evenly, including carefully selected multimedia features.

Nokia 6730 Classic uses a 3.2 MP camera. Although still using CMOS sensor, this camera is equipped with a number of latest features including flash and some professional camera settings. However, it doesn’t have auto-focus facilities. The results are good enough in that we can see sharp captured corners. However, for indoor shots, the results will depend on the amount of light on the object. Using a flash won’t help much.

For video recording, the camera has lower performance than that of Nokia’s N series. It supports MP4 videos, and they only have a maximum frame rate of 15 fps with VGA resolution.

Like other S60 phones, Nokia 6730 Classic comes with the Real Player facility. The player supports various formats such as mp4, 3gp, RealVideo 8/9/10, mp3, wma, aac, eAAC, eAAC+, MIDI, and WAV.

Connectivity

6730 Classic is equipped with complete connection facilities. For internet browsing, for example, this phone uses HSDPA modem. In another word, it has the data line with rates up to 10.2 Mbps (download) and 2 Mbps (upload). However, the working rate will depend on the service provider. Until recently it has been around 3.2 Mbps.

The browser that comes with the handset is nothing to question. However, the screen may be too small for some people to browse the internet conveniently.

Other connection facilities include Bluetooth, supporting A2DP, and data cable. The handset doesn’t provide WiFi connection.

Application and Instalation

Another important feature of 6730 Classic is GPS. It offers internal receiver as well as “turn by turn” navigation that you can use for free. Nokia’s map and navigation features in 6730 Classic are better than the 6 month trial version offered by Nokia’s new handsets so far, although the difference is only in the license policy.

This feature leads you to the destined point with its 2 or 3 dimension display and ‘real time’ voice navigation. There was no delay in receiving the voice navigation when this set was tested in a trip from Jakarta to Tangerang. The voice comes out exactly at the turning point, so it won’t be necessary to look at the digital map on the handset.

Going with the recent trend in cell phones and data line transmission, a number of online features are available. This phone offers ‘search’ facilities supported by search engine Google, emails (either OVI mails or other semi-push emails), music search, music store and such.

In addition, you can still purchase, install and play N-Gage games with 6730 Classic. Even by using Java MIDP 2.0 equipped with an adequate virtual machine, almost all Java games and applications can be installed and run well. However, just remember that it must go with the screen resolution. This is beyond the capability of an OS which can execute a number of 3rd Edition S60 Symbian applications.

Hardware

There haven’t been significant complaints on the handset material. However, if you have a white 6730 Classic, you must be careful when placing it. The plastic cover at the back seems to scratch easily.

Meanwhile, for the internal memory, this set gives 48 MB space, which is not quite much. That’s why Nokia has provided a MicroSD memory slot up to 16 GB. You can get MicroSD containing map applications and such with the capacity of 1 GB in the purchasing package.

Using the newest ARM 11 processor, with its 600 MHz clock speed, any file execution and transfer from one feature to another can be done quickly.

As for its power supply, this handset is equipped with a 1050 mAh lithium-ion battery. This capacity seems average when you run the power consuming applications that it contains. However, in normal use, this battery can last 2 days after charging.

Conclusion

Nokia has launched another Classic phone offering decent features. Although it has “Classic” as its name, it provides almost all features ranging from business to entertainment. The presence of S60 Symbian in Nokia’s Classic products can lead to the entrance of sophisticated features. One of the most interesting features of this handset is its GPS with the high speed data link.

The vulnerability of its casing due to the use of eco-friendly materials may not be an issue, but there are some things related to the design. This includes the small display and font which may make it uncomfortable.
